Poetry & Mindfulness, Feb. 9 - March 16
Learn 6 basic tools of poetry, and 6 weeks worth of daily focusing exercises to help you learn to not only write poetry, but also think, see, speak and be in the world like a poet. This is an excellent course for those wanting to learn the basic tools of writing poetry as an art, or using poetry to enhance a practice of mindfulness.
Structure & Surprise, May 1 - June 8
Poems are meant to “move” us, but how does a poem do that? How does writing lead to a satisfying epiphany, volta, message or meaning? Using the book/blog Structure & Surprise, edited by Michael Theune, we’ll explore a variety of ways to help students and ourselves find satisfying conclusions to our poems and even pieces of prose.
Writer as Editor & Mentor, July 6 - Aug 10
How does one teach poetry? In this workshop we’ll discuss some of the best, basic principles for helping others have a unique creative experience, and subsequently a satisfying revision. This is excellent for those who want to mentor other writers, facilitate workshops, help edit poetry in the context of a group, or even for a journal.
Finding the Narrative Arc in Poetry & Prose, Oct 26 - Nov. 30
Ready to put together a full manuscript, or even jump into a longer piece of writing? In this workshop we’ll cover some of the well-known and lesser-known structures for shaping a narrative. Specifically we’ll look at The Hero’s Journey, the Heroine’s Journey, and The Virgin’s Promise. We’ll look at ways to apply these story beats to different kinds of writing from poetry manuscripts, to memoir to fantasy novels. This is great for those who write or teach prose, or poets who are ready to put together a full book.
